A Chit Chat with Arabia Weddings: Fashion Designer Laila Amraoui

Laila Amraoui  is a Moroccan fashion designer who was born and raised in the Netherlands.

We had the chance to talk to Laila and ask her a few questions:

  • Tell us more about your start, how did you get into the Moroccan caftan design business?

I was born and raised in the Netherlands. I got my master degree in International Economics and was planning to work in this field.

I never thought of becoming a caftan designer until I arrived in Dubai with my husband and kids and started missing my family, our Moroccan culture, tradition and especially our wonderful weddings where the ladies wear the most beautiful caftans.

I wanted to share this part of our culture with the fashion-minded ladies here in the Middle East. So I created Amraoui Couture.

  • How would you describe your style of fashion and your designs?

I like to use basic colors and for me simplicity comes first. It makes the dress and the lady wearing it, elegant. The quality hand work and the embellishments make the final result gorgeous.

  • What materials, fabrics and colors did you use in the new collection?

For my new fall/winter collection I am using velvet, chiffon, brocard and crepe silk.  It either stands alone as a piece or it is combined with other fabrics. Lace, pearls and crystal can always be found in my dresses.

"I like to use basic colors and for me simplicity comes first..."

  • How can a woman choose the perfect caftan for her?

I believe that the caftan suits every woman, no matter what the design is. But that’s me talking as a caftan lover. It’s all a matter of taste. Whether it is the design, color or the fabric, my clients get the time to explore the different designs that I have to offer.

  • Do you prefer modern caftans, classic caftans or a blend of both?

Whatever the style is of the caftan or how far time has passed by, the caftan never changes its most important element: the craftsmanship that goes into these pieces. The handwork that has been passed on for centuries is still the same and gives the caftan the allure it deserves. In my creations you will find modern, traditional and a blend of both.

  • Can a bride collaborate with you to design her own wedding dress or even her engagement or henna party dress?

Yes for sure.  A bridal, engagement or henna caftan distinguishes itself from the other caftans by the extra work that goes into it. Its more elaborated, usually enriched with beads, crystals or pearls. We can discuss her wishes and create the caftan of her dreams.

  • What are your latest favorite trends?

The pastel, gray and nude colors are very appealing as are the more bold colors like dark purple. As for the fabric, lace has and always will have a special place in my collection.

  • Where can people buy your caftans?

My caftans are available at the Palm Strip in Jumeirah 1. For special elaborated dresses you can contact me for a more personal approach.
