A Chit Chat with Arabia Weddings: Saudi Photographer Salma Jammal

Salma Jammal, is a talented Saudi wedding and portrait photographer, who is becoming more and more popular in Saudi Arabia.

Salma Jammal is gaining her popularity on social media channels, while Arab brides are falling in love with her modern and innovative approach to wedding photography.

We had the chance to ask the talented Salma Jammal in Jeddah a few questions, and here is what she had to say:

  • Tell us more about yourself and your start.

I started my photography journey when I was 13 years old; I used to shoot still life and some portraits of my family and friends with my father’s DSLR camera.

A year later, I got my own camera and started experimenting with different styles in photography which has helped me a lot with developing my own style.

I started taking clients in 2011, and then launched my wedding photography business officially in 2012.

  • What is your favorite thing or moment to capture in a wedding?

My favorite moments in a wedding are raw emotions, no posing just natural moments. Documentary images are very special when emotions are caught while the people are unaware of the camera, there will be no artificial feelings.

The best advice for the couple is to enjoy their wedding day and not to be afraid or shy to show their love to one another

  •  What is your best advice for couples in order to get perfect pictures?

I always make sure that the couple gets comfortable throughout the photo session. The best advice for the couple is to enjoy their wedding day and not to be afraid or shy to show their love to one another.

  • What if the location doesn't have the perfect background for the wedding pictures?

The best way to deal with this situation is to work around with light and composition. By lights we can hide and show what we want, also this will help to embrace the wedding venue.

  • How can you reflect a couples' personality through your lens?

That’s why I love to meet the couple before the wedding day to get to know just a little bit about them.

On the wedding day, I have to make them feel relaxed and make the photoshoot more fun and relaxed. That will help prevent the uncomfortable feeling between the photographer and the couple.  The key is to be relaxed and have fun during the wedding day, and making the couple talk to each other will help sometimes.

I feel now that brides like to see natural and spontaneous images of them during the wedding

  • Do you work with couples who live in other Arab countries outside Saudi Arabia?

I have worked with couples from different cultures and all the weddings were held in Saudi Arabia.  It’s really nice to see different happy moments expressed in different ways.

  • What are the main wedding photography trends you are seeing in 2015?

I feel now that brides like to see natural and spontaneous images of them during the wedding. Also using some kinds of props during the photo shoot to add fun elements to their wedding images is a trend we are seeing in 2015.
