The wedding ceremony of Chad’s President Idriss Deby, and daughter of Sudan’s Janjaweed militia leader, Musa Hilal took place on Friday at Rotana Hotel in Khartoum.
The president's new wife Amani, is a new university graduate in her 20’s. She told local press “No one has forced me into this marriage; we are not in the Stone Age."
According to press reports,"Deby paid a $26 million dowry of which $25 million was paid to Musa Hilal and the rest to his daughter in the form of gold and jewelry."
President Omer Al-Bashir represented the bride while President Idriss Deby was represented by a family relative named Abdo Ongi.
Sudan Tribune comments on the wedding: "the ceremony was attended by 400 VIPs including Bashir and the head of Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) General Mohamed Atta. Also present at the wedding was the chief of the United Nations - African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), the peacekeeping mission in Darfur, Ibrahim Gambari".
