According to the Palestinian Interior Ministry in Gaza, women now have the right to keep their family names and not take their husband's name after marriage.

Director General of Civil Affairs Ministry of the Interior, Ahmad Al Haleemi, said in a press release: "A wife can keep the name of her family if married to a man from another family, by signing a request herself."

Al Haleemi also said that women who are about to get married, will be able to keep their identity card with no amendments or changes.

The only change that will occur is the status of the woman from single to married and have the name of her husband added.

The Legal Committee of the Palestinian Legislative Council (parliament), provided a  proposal for adding an article in the law containing that no changes have to be done to the wife's identity card.
