Newlyweds on the Isle of Scilly got a surprise when the groom was arrested as they left the church, and giving a ‘life sentence’ by a joker police officer.

Now the photo of Alistair Robinson being led away by an officer for 'wasting police time' has attracted almost 5,000 'likes'  on Facebook after being shared on the force's official page.

The 34-year-old groom from Congleton decided to contact the tiny island's police and ask them to be part of his wedding to his partner of six years, Sara, after following their antics on social media.

The arresting photograph showing the moment Alistair Robinson was 'nicked' by officers on the Isle of Scilly on his wedding day. Since being shared on Facebook it has attracted almost 5,000 likes from well-wishers

Alistair Robinson, who married his partner of six years Sara, contacted the force asking if they'd be involved

The Isles of Scilly Facebook has almost 40,000 likes, and has previously written funny updates including a job advert which said new recruits needed 'Unflinching confidence to know what to do when you are alerted to an abandoned seal pup making its way up the high street', and appointing a cat 'Deputy Chief Constable Mowgli'.

Alistair said: ‘I met up with them when we were there and they said they had a couple of ideas, but didn’t divulge too much.

‘On the day itself me and my best man got picked up by the bobby there and taken to the church – we had no other way of getting to the church.

‘The night before they came asked if they could have five minutes of my time after the ceremony, when we had all come out – where they continue to arrest me for wasting police time.

‘He told Sara to look the other way, then the officer gripped me and made his little speech.’

Luckily for Alistair he wasn’t forced to spend his wedding night behind bars, after he was released soon after.

But the couple, who both work at the Cheshire Constabulary, had no idea the moment had been shared on Facebook, with almost 5,000 people from all over the world 'liking' the picture taken by wedding photographer Chris Hall.

‘He didn’t actually specify why he wanted us there or what role he wanted us to have so we reverted to type and arrested him on a trumped up charge of Wasting Police Time as he left the church.

‘It will be the joy in his Bride's, face as he was lead off in cuffs that will hurt him the most. He got life'

‘If you approve of our Zero Tolerance, no nonsense, approach please let us know. It is so important to get feedback.’

Sara told MailOnline she was completely surprised by what happened on our wedding day.

‘I was very surprised. I knew that something was going to happen, and that Alistair had been in contact with the police, but no idea what they were going to do’, 30-year-old Sara said.'

‘It was an absolutely amazing day.’
