Saudi Couple Gets Married on Skype!
Mon 05-05-2014

A Saudi couple exchanged their marriage vows over Skype, UAE daily Gulf News reported.

The groom, Ayedh Al Naqool, who is studying in the US and his bride back home in the Gulf kingdom, tied the knot via smartphones in a VoIP session using the Microsoft-owned service, with Fayez Fawaz Al Nafii officiating.

"It was the first time in my seven years in service that I was asked to use smartphones to do such a thing," said Al Nafii.

"However, as all the conditions for a valid wedding were met and as I could communicate directly with the groom even though he was not in the room with me, I went ahead with the ceremony. I will always recall this wedding."

Saudi Arabia's telecoms regulator the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) declared in March 2013 that platform providers such as Skype were flouting the kingdom's telecoms regulations. It directed operators such as Mobily, Zain Saudi and STC to explore ways to monitor or block the service.
