Confessions of a Real Bride: Shayma Zaq

Shayma and Hisham met at a local concert for Tarek Abu Kwaik in Amman-Jordan; they were introduced by mutual friends.

“We were very close friends for almost 6 months before we took our relationship to the next level, .” Shayma commented.

Here is what Shayma had to say about her wedding planning experience to Arabia Weddings:

  • When was the wedding held and where?

We got married on the 18th of August, 2013. Our wedding took place at Amman International Hotel. I instantly fell in love with the venue, it was everything we were looking for; it was so cozy, warm and it felt like our backyard garden.

  • Did you hire a wedding planner or planned the wedding yourself?

I absolutely did not hire a wedding planner! I planned our wedding myself which was fun, but sometimes nerve racking. I also bought most of the wedding decoration supplies myself from here and there.

  • What is the biggest advice you can give any bride-to-be?
  1. Just relax and have fun. It’s only one day, it’s a pretty big day but still it’s only a couple of hours, we all hear that before the wedding but never seem to believe it till after.
  2. Focus on having a marriage more beautiful than your wedding.
  3. Nothing will go perfectly as planned but it’s ok, as long as you’re having fun, it will not matter.
  4. Invest in a really good DJ to make sure everyone doesn't leave the dance floor and in a great photographer to guarantee special memories, and if you can get him to start with you early in the morning it would be even better,;  in order to capture all the moments and aspects of your special day.
  5. As for the bride, make sure you know what you want for your look, take only few close people with you for dress shopping so you won't get torn between different opinions.
  6. As for the big day, trust the experts for your hair and makeup but don't do anything you're not completely convinced with; never compromise with your looks. And most importantly, surround yourself with loved ones and people who will truly be happy for you.

  • What was the theme or color scheme you picked for your wedding?

White with a touch of silver and blush. I tried to keep everything basic and minimal. The wedding theme was a fairytale, Cinderella story to be more specific. I was trying to have the same wedding I imagined when I was a kid. We even had a dress and a tuxedo to go along with the theme.

  • Do you recommend specific suppliers you worked with?

The team at  Amman International Hotel’s was just amazing and super helpful, especially their manager Basma Alqasem - she's an absolute sweetheart.

Assi, from Assi & Nasser Hair and Beauty Salon, he did my hair twice at the wedding; he was fast, professional and knew exactly what I wanted. Our photographer was brilliant! Farras Oran is not your typical wedding photographer, that’s why I wanted him to be part of our wedding to make sure there are no cheesy poses.

  • What was the most difficult and stressful part of wedding planning?

Throughout the wedding preparation my fiancé was in Dubai the whole time and I had to go through this experience without him by my side, it was hard and sad not being able to share every little detail with him.

Also, planning the wedding on my own before the actual wedding day was fun, but during the day it was challenging to keep up with everything.

  • Did you face any surprises?

A couple of major ones, but we were having so much fun to bother and we laughed them off.

  • Do you consider yourself as a relaxed bride or more of a bridezilla?

A total and a complete bridezilla! I was trying very hard to be on top of everything and making sure everything goes smoothly and as planned, but I had a lot of help from our friends who were amazing enough to put up with me and hide from me when they had to.

  • Describe your wedding day and the planning process.

On the wedding day, our friends, husband and I got ready in the hotel (however, I didn't let my husband see me till we were all ready).

They all had a part in the wedding in terms of decorating, picking up the car, getting my dress from the dry-cleaners and even doing my makeup and helping my husband and I to get ready.

So it was a fun day from the beginning. I didn't expect the wedding party to be as much fun as it was, we ended up having the best time, and we didn't sit down once through the whole wedding, neither did our friends and everyone stayed till the lights and music were out.

  • Did Arabia Weddings help you in your wedding planning?

It helped in brainstorming and getting very personal ideas while planning.
