Green Tea’s Various Health Benefits

The ancient Chinese used green tea for over 4000 years as a treatment. Recent scientific research has proven the health benefits of green tea and its role in the treatment and prevention of many diseases.

Green tea contains over 200 active vital compounds, mostly antioxidants. As flavonoids; an important class of antioxidants, the catechins; which constitute 30-40% of the antioxidants in tea extract powder, theanine; which constitutes 4-6% of the antioxidants. It’s also one of the amino acids that are found only in tea; which gives the flavor of tea, and caffeine.

In addition to:

  • Vitamins B and C but with fewer amounts than in black tea.
  • Minerals; which constitute between 6-8% of the total components of green tea, such as manganese, fluoride and aluminum.
  • Some organic acids such as gallic and quinic acids.
  • Carbohydrates; which constitute 10-15% of the components of green tea.
  • And small amounts of volatiles.

Green tea has many health benefits, such as:
1)Preventing Cancer
The importance of green tea in preventing cancer was proven in many studies, where the antioxidant compounds protect the DNA from the effect of free radicals. By blocking the blood vessels in the tumor cells, polyphenol compounds inhibit proliferation of cancer cells; in addition to the role of antioxidants in protecting the skin from ultraviolet rays of the sun.

A study conducted in Japan on 500 women found that increased consumption of green tea before and after surgery significantly reduced the risk of recurrence of breast cancer. An analysis based on 22 studies to determine the relationship between green tea and lung cancer found that eating two cups of green tea a day may reduce the risk of developing lung cancer by 18%.

2)Reducing the Level of LDL Cholesterol
Many researchers believe that green tea works through antioxidants on the stability of blood cholesterol level by reducing absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Antioxidants also prevent conversion of LDL cholesterol from its normal condition to the oxidized and thus preventing its accumulation on the walls of blood arteries.

3)Helping You Lose the Weight
Polyphenols facilitates the elimination of triglycerides, the substance of EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) that activates the process of your metabolism and speeds up weight loss. Caffeine promotes the work of the central nervous system to launch more fat in the bloodstream to use as a source of energy and thus promote weight loss.

4)Enhancing Skin Health
Antioxidants play a major role in maintaining healthy skin by preventing the formation of free radicals in the cells of the skin, by protecting it from ultraviolet rays of the sun.

5)Alleviating Acne
Green tea reduces the effects of acne through its work as an anti-bacterial. It diminishes swelling and irritation of the skin.
It also prevents the formation of free radicals that damage skin cells and make the skin more susceptible to the growth of acne.
It helps balancing hormonal action for the prevention of acne in the future.

6)Delaying Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease
A study done at the University of South Florida proved that enzymes contained in green tea protect brain cells from damage. As well, EGCG (anti-oxidants) prevent the formation of the protein that activates the chemical reaction that leads to damaging cells, thus preventing Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

7)Easing Rheumatoid Arthritis
Many scientists and health professionals recommend drinking green tea as a remedy for the legitimate treatment of arthritis. The active compound (EGCG) protects the cartilage cells and polyphenol reduces the swollen joints and pain.

8)Decreasing Cavities
Some compounds in green tea function as an anti-bacterial, as fluoride that strengthens the teeth and force protection.
