Confessions of a Real Bride: Asma Saqqaf

Asma Saqqaf & Ammar Malkawi met by accident and fell in love. They got married on June 29, 2012 in Irbid (north of Jordan) at Arabella Halls.

  • Did you hire a wedding planner or planned your wedding yourself? How was your experience?

Actually, we did not hire a wedding planner; I planned for everything and enjoyed every single detail of the preparations! I think that this is a personal experience that each bride should go through it without hiring any wedding planner. I admit it wasn’t easy to plan a whole wedding by myself, especially that my wedding was in Irbid while I live in Amman (80 km away), so I had to do most of the planning on the phone!

I used to go to Irbid over the weekend to check out the process and progress. I didn’t want to take a day off before the wedding as I wanted to save my annual leave for later. My cousin helped me a lot in planning the wedding as he was always there in Irbid sending me pictures of the details.

The most difficult part was getting in contact with the vendors, suppliers, and shops in Irbid as most of them are not listed and even if they were, they don’t really cooperate well, so it was a bit exhausting going back and forth every week.

  • What is the biggest advice you can give any bride-to-be when planning for her wedding?

    • Ask your photographer to stay close and around you, I was surprised when I had to keep looking for the photographer whenever I wanted to take a picture.
    • If you wear the hijab like I do, take many pictures with your hijab on at your wedding so you can share those pictures with strangers, post them on Facebook, or display them at home. This is one mistake I made and regret.
    • Start planning early for both the wedding and your new home. I completed my home 5 months ahead of the wedding.
    • Insist on having your wedding where you are located not where your husband is located! A bride has much more work to do than the groom, and having the wedding venue near you will make the process much easier and save you a lot of time and money.
    • Make everything simple, simpler is better.
    • Involve your sisters and friends in organizing and preparing for the wedding.
    • Enjoy every moment and to put your personal touch in your big day! I had great fun!

  • Did you pick a certain theme or color scheme? What was it? Did you use it all through the wedding?

Only white! This is my favorite color, I like everything to be simple, and I love white flowers.

  • What was the most difficult and stressful part of wedding planning?

The most stressful thing was that I had to organize everything from Amman. I have a full time job so I was confused and wanted everything to be perfect. I had to work all week in Amman and during the weekend I had to go to Irbid to work on my wedding, so there was no time to relax.

  • Do you recommend specific suppliers you worked with? Feel free to include as many as you wish.

I did my hair and makeup at Zwari Salon, which was a Special Deal I ordered through Arabia Weddings. I loved it! I also like the team there, they were very kind, professional, and understanding. They gave me lots of advice as well.

I didn’t like dealing with suppliers located in Irbid at all, it was difficult getting in contact with them and I didn't feel like they cared about my opinion. They just wanted to get it over and done with, regardless of the outcome.

  • Did you face any surprises? If so how did you deal with them?

I decided not to allow any mistake to ruin my happiness during the wedding. However, there were some small mistakes that only I noticed.

  • Do you consider yourself as a relaxed bride or more of a bridezilla?

I am a relaxed bride... or at least I consider myself so. At first I was a bit frustrated but then I realized that I shouldn't worry about the small details and enjoy my big day.

  • How can you best describe your wedding and the planning process?

Perfect planning process and happy bride. After all the hard work I got the wedding that I wanted. At the end everything was perfect, guests don't notice the small details a bride usually worries about.
