There are two popular beaches in Sri Lanka:

The island is known for its soft sandy beaches and full of beautiful beaches with picturesque natural surroundings. The most popular beaches in Sri Lanka are Bentota and Hikkaduwa, which offer a variety of activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing and floating on glass bottom boats.

For the food lovers:

Sri Lankans usually eat out in small cafes, confusingly called "Hotels", which usually sell rice and curry. Try them out! You will also find touristy hotels selling burnt chicken and chips, also worth a try.

Thambili, is the juice from the King Coconut, sold at the side of streets throughout the island, the coconut is cut open in front of you.

Colombo:

Colombo is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. Over 2 million people live in this city. The Fort area is the business center of the country and is home to the World Trade Center, as well as other modern buildings. 

Galle Face Green has a fantastic view of the Indian Ocean, and if timed right, a spectacular sunset.

Cinnamon Gardens is home to many of the city's most luxurious homes.

The Pettah area is a bazaar where one can watch people bargain for just about anything.

Kurunegala:

Kurunegala is surrounded by coconut plantations and rubber estates.

It is also famous for its 8 large rocks, which all have characteristic names, 6 of which come from the animals that they are imagined to represent:

  • Etha-gala/ Elephant Rock
  • Ibba-gala/ Tortoise Rock
  • Ada-gala/ Eel Rock
  • Elu-gala/Goat Rock
  • Kuruminiya-gala/Beetle Rock
  • Wandura-gala/Monkey Rock
  • Yakdessa-gala/Witch Rock
  • Goni-gala/Sack Rock

Nuwara Eliya:

Nuwara Eliya means "City of Light", it is a mountain station at 1,868 meters of altitude. Nuwara Eliya was built during the 19th century and its architecture mimics that of an English country town, with red-brick walls, country houses like hill club and mock-Tudor half-timbering.

Sigiriya:

Sigiriya, also known as the Lion Mountain, is the best-preserved city center in Asia from the first millennium, with its combination of buildings and gardens with their trees, pathways and water gardens. Sigiriya should have been one of the Wonders of the Ancient World.

Sigiriya's main attraction is the Sigiri Rock, rising 200 meters above the ground, and has the Lion staircase leading to the palace garden on the summit.

Once there you need to discover the Sigiri Water Gardens, which displays one of the world's most sophisticated hydraulic technologies, dating from the Early Historic Period. 

Wadduwa:

Wadduwa is located conveniently between Colombo and the beach resorts of Beruwela and Bentota. Located between coconut plantations and facing an un-crowded beach, Wadduwa is the ideal destination for those looking for a luxurious, tropical hideaway.

Kandy:

Kandy is a large city in central Sri Lanka. It's set on a plateau surrounded by mountains, which are home to tea plantations and biodiverse rainforest. The city's heart is scenic Kandy Lake (Bogambara Lake), which is popular for strolling. Kandy is famed for sacred Buddhist sites, including the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) shrine, celebrated with the grand Esala Perahera annual procession.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage:

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage has become one of the largest tourist attractions in the country due to its distinctive population of elephants. The Orphanage started off with the introduction of 5 abandoned baby elephants - it is now home to 93 elephants.
