Italian Wedding Industry Supports Bezos’ Wedding Amidst Venice Protests

The lavish wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez in Venice didn't just capture headlines; it reignited a fierce debate over how ancient, culturally rich cities navigate large-scale private events. On one side, accusations of "appropriation" by the ultra-rich echoed across social media. On the other, the discussion often missed a critical economic truth: the sprawling, skilled network of professionals and cultural industries that are sustained by destination weddings and high-profile celebrations.

Tommaso Corsini, founder and CEO of WIM – We Inspire Memories, a leading platform of Italy's B2B event and wedding sector, emphasizes the need for a more nuanced discussion beyond simplistic narratives.

Distinguishing Private Events from Overtourism

Corsini argues that it's a grave mistake to confuse overtourism with private events. He states that 250 well-managed guests will not jeopardize Venice's future. The real issue isn't the elite, but rather the lack of a comprehensive strategy for managing tourist flows in the city.

The Bezos wedding, with an estimated budget of over 30 million euros, engaged dozens of local businesses, from technical suppliers and security professionals to historic venues and logistics personnel. Events like this offer concrete opportunities for local economies, generating immediate benefits and lasting positive image returns, argues Corsini.

The wedding, which will be held on 27 June, will be organised  by Lanza & Baucina, a London-based company founded by Italians, known globally for planning exclusive celebrity weddings. They have a long history of managing high-profile VIP events in Venice, such as the George Clooney and Amal Amal Alamuddin's wedding, always with a strict adherence to respecting the urban fabric, utilizing local suppliers, and avoiding any issues. Their international reputation for excellence is well-established.

The Vital Role of Private Events in Cultural Preservation

Corsini further explains that without destination weddings, private productions, and international corporate events, thousands of Italian cultural assets—both public and private—would struggle to survive. Regulated and responsible private events are crucial for the maintenance and enhancement of numerous extraordinary locations. He warns that criminalizing them is not only short-sighted but also dangerous.

Economic Impact and Future Outlook

Italy's private events sector is valued at over 15 billion euros annually and involves more than 50,000 businesses, most of which are highly specialized micro or small enterprises. It's a sector defined by craftsmanship, precision, and vision, and it should not be treated like mass tourism.

Through its events and sector analysis, WIM promotes dialogue among industry stakeholders, giving a voice to a professional community that seeks recognition, strategy, and perspective.

These professionals send a clear message: it's essential to differentiate between indiscriminate consumption of the territory and sustainable enhancement. Well-planned private events, they argue, undoubtedly fall into the latter category.

Corsini concludes by stating that in Italy, where excellence is too often hindered rather than protected, it's time to change course. He advocates for listening to those who work with competence and ethics and to stop demonizing those who bring value, simply because they do it in grand style.
