Your Marriage Firsts

There is a first time for everything, and once you are married you will go through a series of “firsts” with your spouse.

Here are some of the things you should expect in your first year of marriage:

The First Big Fight:And we mean big! You know, the fight with all the yelling and slamming doors. You will eventually get angry and feel like shouting, but it’s ok, you are both stressed about your new life together. Also read: "Your ‘First Fight’ Box at Your Wedding"

Whatever you do, don’t leave your partner alone, don’t leave the house or let him/her do the same.  Instead, go into a separate room until you are calm and can talk again.

The First Gathering after the Wedding:Now that you are no longer the center of attention, and you are back to real life, your friends will probably want to meet up with you. If you feel that some of your friends are treating you differently now that you’re married, or that your group of single friends exclude you in their outings, then attend their gatherings and don’t cancel on them.

Don’t talk nonstop about married life and your wedding, but rather ask them about what they’ve been up to and what’s new in their life.

The First In-Laws Incident:No matter how much you love your in-laws or how much they love you back, you will at some point feel stressed out with them.  Remember that you’re husband/wife is used to their family’s mistakes and flaws, so just do the same as your partner.

Try not to be too sensitive and treat your in-laws like you would treat your parents and be more relaxed about their being in your life.

The First Lunch/Dinner Invite:You might be stressing about being the perfect host and impressing everyone that’s coming over to your house, but remember that this is supposed to be a fun gathering! You should both go grocery shopping, and discuss what to serve, and it’s okay if you ruin something or something goes wrong, everyone knows it’s your first time hosting at your house and everyone who loves you will understand.
