Marriott Crosses 100-Property Mark in Saudi Arabia with Landmark Makkah Signing

Marriott International has reached a significant development milestone, announcing its 100th property across Saudi Arabia, which includes both operational hotels and the extensive project pipeline. This landmark achievement coincides with the signing of a new agreement with Saudi-based investment group SEDCO Capital to develop a massive 1,100-room Courtyard by Marriott property in Makkah. Expected to open in 2030, the Courtyard by Marriott Makkah Masar will anchor the Holy City’s new Masar Destination. This multi-use development integrates commercial, retail, residential, and cultural facilities, and is strategically aligned with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goal to host 30 million pilgrims annually.
The property will span 4,500 square metres and feature multiple dining venues, a large ballroom, a fitness centre, a dedicated kids’ club, and retail stores.
Jerome Briet, Chief Development Officer of Europe, Middle East & Africa at Marriott International, commented: "The signing of Courtyard by Marriott Makkah Masar reflects our profound confidence in the Kingdom’s tourism growth and infrastructure development. As part of our broader expansion aligned with Vision 2030, this project strengthens our presence in the Holy City and will offer visitors a modern, service-oriented hospitality experience within the landmark Masar master plan."
Marriott has operated in Saudi Arabia since 1980 and currently manages more than 11,000 keys across 13 brands. Courtyard by Marriott is the company’s most widely represented brand in the Kingdom, with six properties currently in operation. These include: Courtyard by Marriott Riyadh Olaya and Courtyard by Marriott Riyadh Northern Ring Road.
Marriott’s aggressive growth reflects a broader trend of expansion among international hospitality groups in Saudi Arabia, as the Kingdom aims to attract 150 million visitors by 2030.
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) recently unveiled two new hotels, adding a combined 338 keys, and has 60 more properties in the pipeline. Similarly, Hilton is strengthening its Makkah presence with two upcoming hotels that will add 1,767 new keys to its portfolio.
