Dolce & Gabbana, the Italian fashion house launched its first collection of abayas and hijabs!
Now that high-end fashion is positively booming in the Middle East, management consultancy Bain recently reported that sales of personal luxury goods in the Middle East hit $8.7 billion in 2015! Up from $6.8 billion the year before.
Women from wealthy oil states have long expressed their flair for fashion with pricey handbags and shoes, visible when worn with an abaya and hijab.
Many of these women are already consumers of designer apparel, often wearing brands including Dolce & Gabbana head-to-toe underneath their modest abayas, viewable in the privacy of their homes or among other women.
D&G already operates 13 stores and boutiques in the United Arab Emirates alone, with multiple outposts across Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
Their core clientele has been customizing their abayas for decades, adding Swarovski crystals and other delicate details to sleeves and hemlines.
D&G’s new line manages to be both respectful of their Middle Eastern shoppers’ needs while staying true to their spirited, Sicily-inspired aesthetic: think lush lace embellishments, bright floral details and even a vibrant lemon print.
If D&G’s hijabs and abayas prove a hit, expect to see more household-name labels following suit. And expect to see more retailers tailoring their operations to the needs of the Middle Eastern consumer.
